A Japanese man has died in a fire that engulfed a luxury hotel in Myanmar's commercial capital of Yangon

A Japanese man has died in a fire that engulfed a luxury hotel in Myanmar's commercial capital of Yangon, burning the historic teak-wood building almost to the ground.
The blaze at the lakeside Kandawgyi Palace Hotel broke out early on Thursday morning, according to local reports, which also said one Chinese citizen and a firefighter had been taken to hospital.
The dead victim's nationality was confirmed to dpa by the Japanese embassy.
The hotel's 96 rooms were reportedly occupied by 141 guests, the majority of whom were foreign tourists.
A US tourist told local magazine Frontier Myanmar that she heard no fire alarm and was awoken by hotel staff.
Firefighters battled the blaze for more than three hours before bringing it under control. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Parts of the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel date back to the 1930s.
